I’m not a snob

So, my English class groupmates weren’t as boring as hell as I thought they would be. In fact, I think they’re very nice people. There are five of us in my English group - Budz, the friendly slightly portly girl from Pangasinan whom I have befriended since day one, Kenneth, a simple, lanky gay(?) boy who’s very nice, Jen, the token snooty girl of the group and Edison, the Computer Science dude who loves Sugarfree.

All in all they’re not bad people. I guess I just need to open up more to people ‘cause some people think snobbish because I seldom smile. True, I smile only on rare occasions not because I’m a snob but because smiling is just not normal for me. It’s a completely alien thing for me to do. I guess that’s what happens when you’re a grave teen.

Also, I don’t wear my eyeglasses when I walk on the halls around campus because I get so self-consciuos about wearing glasses that I just pass up wearing them in public thus impairing my vision resulting in my non-familiarity of faces in front of me, even if I know them from class.

I guess I should just wear my glasses in the hallways (or better yet, wear contacts, but that’s another issue) AND I should definitely practice how to smile properly in my bedroom mirror…

Shifting directions

So I’ve been missing some of my classes on Math and Computer Science intentionally for the past few days. The reason for that is that I just feel that I’m fighting for a lost cause, i.e. I’ll end up taking Math again next semester (plus my current Math teacher sucks) and my heart is not really into Computer Science.

I have now decided to take the path least taken and major in Geography instead, my first love.

As a kid, instead of playing outside all I did was look at atlases, read and/or create maps, flip through pages of encyclopedias, et al., so it’s not surprising that I have chosen Geography as my course. Never mind if I don’t get a high-paying job that being a Computer Science graduate could offer, I’d still be happy if I get to be a geographer someday. Besides, I hear that with Geography, I can enter different fields of work according to my specialization.

I can be an Environmental geographer and be part of NGOs like UNICEF and that sort. Or I could be a Physical geographer and study weather forecasting and climatology - with that I could work for major news stations behind the camera doing weather prediction which is pretty sweet (I am geek. I know.). I could be an Urban Planner or an Economic geographer or even a Human/Cultural geographer. The possibilities are endless, though working here in the Philippines may just not suffice my satisfaction. I may just have to work in other countries, wherever they may be, to satisfy my curiosity of seeing the world.

As you may have noticed, I’m pretty psyched about taking up Geography in college. Fingers crossed I’ll someday travel across the globe and that in 10 years time, I would be very happy with the choice I’ve made and that going to work wouldn’t feel like a hassle at all.

Weekly update

Saying that this week will be pretty hectic for me just might be the understatement of the year. various activities in school are lining up for me just awaiting my beck and call; hopefully I can give all of them the attention they most deserve.

First on the menu is my tedious English assignment to be passed to be passed by tomorrow. Then shortly after, in the afternoon, lucky passersby around the University oval shall witness yours truly running around like a little girl (no offense to little girls), slightly asphyxiated, and roasting my skin under blistering heat. The run is training for my upcoming training climb in the weekend in a still unrevealed location…

Then on Wednesday, I’ll be attending my first pre-climb meeting in preparation for the climb where I’ll get to meet and greet my new climbing group. I’m telling you right now that we are so gonna be BFFs* coming into the weekend.

Thursday gonna be the same old shit BUT, and this is a BIG BUT, I’ll also be having my practical exam in PE (Arnis) which is gonna be interesting to say the least. Hopefully this time, no broken bones will be incurred and bumps and bruises will be kept to a minimum.

Friday will be a big day for me for it’ll all be about preparation for my climb to the mountains. Important things on the checklist include mosquito repellents, sunscreen, fancy shades, a picnic basket and a guitar for spontaneous joyful singing in the mountains ala The Sound of Music. Who needs a tent anyways?

*Best Friends Forever! (yep, with an exclamation point)

University

First, let me just say that I am very fortunate to be studying at the University of the Philippines. It has always been my dream to study there. I was so adamant at studying there that I didn’t even think of taking entrance exams in other universities (which was pretty ballsy ‘cause that meant I didn’t have any back-up schools to fall on at all) .

My first course choice was Electronics and Communications Engineering but unfortunately, I didn’t pass the quota so I had to settle for my second choice which was Computer Science. I am so glad I made that choice. You see, I love computers. Let me rephrase that, I LUV computers. Yes, I’m a big dork (shut up!). I also wanted to major in Geography but seriously, what am I gonna do with a geography degree? Plus I know I’ll never make enough money as a geographer here in the Philippines (unfortunately).

So far, I’m really loving my college life. Sure, my schedule’s quite hectic but I think that’s what’s expected but I’m having a very nice time. People really dont’ care about what you wear, I feel like I’m part of some big community (having passed the most difficult entrance exam in the whole country), I meet new people everyday, the campus is uber-huge and the professors are really good.

Busy as a bee

Gosh, I have so much to do yet so little time to do it. You see, this coming Friday I have my first Programming assignment for my Computer Science class (CS 11), I’ll be having my first long exam in Math 17 (Algebra and Trigonometry) plus there’s the Natural Science long exam on Tuesday. *sigh*

Hopefully things will work out just fine….
